We all are familiar with school law and the legal issues in education. This article provides an overview of legal issues and laws pertaining to school safety that parents, guardians, and educators show be familiar with. Some of the topics of discussion include bullying, premises liability, First Amendment concerns, student codes of conduct/discipline policies, and school related product safety. Definitely a good read.
Yes we know that all of the above should know about these legal issues. However, often times they receive the information but fail to take the time to read and become familiar with it. I am speaking of the code of conduct in particular. Often time people react to situations once they occur rather than taking that time to know as much as possible in advance.
ReplyDeleteThe biggest thing I took from this article was to be sure to know your school or school district's code of conduct and district policies. Then make sure your parents/stakeholders are very familiar with theses policies. If you remain fair and consistent, referring to these policies when problems like student injury, bullying, and harassment occur the procedures to resolve should be easy. Most parents are most concerned with their children's safety so a school's #1 goal should be that students learn in a safe and secure environment. This article also reminds me to read up on current practices with regards to laws made with school safety in mind.
ReplyDeleteThis article shed light on different laws and situations that may arise in schools dealing with school safety. One thing that stuck out to me was they took a different approach to school safety dealing with bullying, first amendment rights and material on school campuses. This is different from what most of us think about when we hear “school safety”. We mostly think about active shooters and other major acts of violence on our campuses. I’m glad I read the article because it helped me broaden my scope of school safety and realize that for a school to be safe takes more than an armed guard at the door.

School safety encompasses not only the physical safety of the student, but also the emotional safety. It is so important to know the code of conduct for your school district and follow that policy. Being fair and consistent, while knowing your school law will help deter lawsuits.
ReplyDeleteSchool safety has always been one of the most important issues at schools. It didn’t get any less popular and discussable since I have left school. Not the only good thing, but the best thing about the article is the fact that parents will be aware from now on. Awareness is what makes us concerned in the problems of the outer world, it what makes us take action. That’s why this article will trigger much bigger interest from the parent’s side. I only wish that the kids had more safety in the Net. They don’t have to be scared of the harassment every time they look for where can I buy an essay online and improve their academic performance.
