2014 TAASRO 15th Annual "Safe Schools" Conference

TAASRO is once again gearing up for our annual conference. Potential education slated for this year involves: juvenile emotional and physical responses to stressful environments explained through psychological and biological means, new trends in music, clothing and behavior that effects the school environment, adaptive mindset concerning personal safety (self-defense), new active shooter response techniques, information on human trafficking, school massacre in Beslan, Russia (blueprint for American school attack), understanding and interacting with special education students. Given these topics, I am soliciting suggestions for a conference theme that would integrate each into a single purpose of education.

  1. I have attended two conferences thus far and each time I leave filled with much needed information for my district and community. After attending today's board of directors meeting, I am equally impressed with the plan for 2014 conference.

The board is "spot on" in the direction they are moving. As for a theme, I always tend to lean toward teaching our youth their leadership responsibility in our society. Many of the topics discuss, not only address security, but the adolescent mind and how to facilitate their transformation to adulthood.

With that, I suggest a potential theme such as: "Leading and protecting our future." Just a thought. Really enjoy the commitment by all SRO's.

  2. I have attended two conferences thus far and have participated in active shooter twice. Both conferences contained valuable information that I have been able to use at my school.

I think the theme for the 2014 conference should reflect the efforts of both officers and school administration to learn together and partner in protecting the children under our care. Based on our discussions at the board meeting yesterday this 15th anniversary conference should be a blast.

  5. I have attended the TAASRO "Safe Schools" Conference two out of the last three years. Great conferences! The TAASRO elected officers and board of directors are doing an outstanding job!! The 15th Annual TAASRO "Safe Schools" Conference was discussed at the District 1 meeting I attended on October 29th in Hoover. The upcoming conference topics and presenters should be very beneficial to all in attendance!!

  6. I attended my first TAASRO Conference this past summer (2013) and it was the best conference I attended all year. I want to thank the TAASRO Board for providing such a relevant and useful conference and am looking forward to attending the 2014 TAASRO Conference.

    1. As a resource for online safety, I attended a conference and heard a gentleman speak on the concept of "public and permanent." the concept is that everything you put online can viewed by all, the internet is not a private club. This is one of the things that I share with our students, at our grade level meetings during the school year. This may be one avenue to explore for an up coming event.

  7. I would like to see more info on safe online practices. We are seeing more issues coming to school that begin with an online coversation or action.

  8. I have attended the last 7 TAASRO Conferences and have nothing but good to say about each one. Many of you, including myself , would like to hear more about social media as it is a constant issue at our school. We deal with it just about everyday in some form or another.
We had a young lady speak on the issue last year but I would love for the session to have been longer and for her to perform online, many of the examples she spoke about.
Looking forward to seeing everyone there this year.

  9. I have also attended numerous TAASRO conference. I would personally say it is the best conference that I can attend each year as an educator. I agree with Joaquin, it would be great to hear more on social media. This has a significant impact on our schools and is typically one of the major sources of bullying.

  10. I agree with Joaquin concerning the lady who spoke about monitoring Twitter. It seemed like something we could use on almost a daily basis and give us an incite to the goings on with our students.
